FAQ

How often should I have my dog groomed?
It depends on the breed of your dog, his lifestyle and on how you want him/her to look and smell. In general short-coated dogs with no skin conditions can go six to eight weeks between baths unless they have become very dirty or smelly. Longer-coated  or curly coated dogs should be groomed every four to six weeks to ensure their hair doesn’t get matted and isn’t harbouring insects or hiding skin conditions. Certain breeds of dog should be groomed more often than others to maintain their appearance. We recommend brushing your dogs at home at least three times a week if possible.

How long does it take?
This depends on size, coat condition, temperament but as a general rule it will take between 2 and 3 hours.  We will give you an estimated pick up time when you drop your dog off and will also call you when your dog is ready.  Please collect your dog as soon as we call.

How much does it cost?
We can give an estimated cost over the phone and on the prices page of this website based on the breed of the dog, but will need to asses the dog's coat condition and temperament and also what style you would like. Some styles takes longer and matted coats will also need extra time and work. We will not de-matt a severely matted dog. The best solution for the dog in that instance is to clip the coat back and start again, with regular home brushing between grooms.  If this is the case we will work with you to get your dog's coat back into good condition.

Why does my dog have to be shaved, can't you brush the matts out?
To de-matt a dog a de-matting tool is slid between the matts and the skin and the matt is "sawed" into smaller pieces before a comb or brush can be used to pull the matt out of the fur. This can be painful and distressing for the dog if there are too many knots.  If a dog is constantly being de-matted when it is at the groomers, it will not enjoy the experience and may learn to fear the groomer.  Matts have to be removed as moisture and dirt gets trapped inside them and they are an ideal bactieria breeding ground.  The bacteria breaks through the skin leading to skin infections and making the dog very uncomfortable.  To prevent matts you need to brush your dog regularly and we are happy to show you how to keep your dog matt free and also recommend tools and brushes to make this easier for you both!

When should I first have my puppy groomed?

Your puppy can be groomed from two weeks after it's second vaccination, ideally around 4 months of age.  From this age to the age of 6 months we offer a puppy groom.  This is a bath, brush, nail clip, ear clean and light scissor trim  of face, feet and bum.  We give the puppy lots of time and reassurance to gently introduce them to each stage of grooming. We aim to make the experience a positive one so that puppy looks forward to each future groom for it's lifetime.  PLEASE NOTE -  full price will be charged from 6 months on.

What if my dog has fleas?
If your dog is found to have fleas on arrival we will reschedule your appointment for you to have the fleas treated before you return so as not to transmit fleas to our other clients.  If we uncover fleas during the groom that were not visible on our health check, we will wash the dog in a flea treatment shampoo  which will kill the fleas on the dog.  There will need to be an additional charge in this event to cover the cost of time spend post groom cleaning and disinfecting the salon so as not to transmit fleas to other dogs.

What if my dog is very nervous?
We are happy to work with nervous dogs.  We like to build up a relationship with nervous of timid dogs and may suggest we break the first couple of grooms into 2 or more sessions as no extra cost to allow the dog to gain trust in us.  If we feel we cannot safely groom your dog or we feel grooming will cause your dog undue stress or anxiety we will let you know.
